Old Man Saltbush

Atriplex nummularia, commonly known as Old Man Saltbush, is a hardy, low-maintenance Australian shrub renowned for its exceptional tolerance to drought, salinity, and poor soils. Traditionally grown as livestock fodder in arid regions and used by First Nations people for its edible leaves and other traditional purposes, this tough plant now also makes an excellent choice for waterwise and low-input gardens. It thrives in dry, challenging environments where many others struggle and functions effectively as a natural windbreak, providing shelter and protection in exposed areas. The silvery-grey foliage adds attractive texture and color contrast, while the leaves have a distinctive salty flavor, reflecting its name and provide some culinary interest to the garden.
